I got this tattoo in aid of mental health awareness. 1 in 4 people suffer with some kind of mental health issue at some point in their lives. Yet, it’s still a taboo subject. This tattoo symbolises my struggle with anxiety. “A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to. That author is you and the sentence is your life.” The heartbeat to me represents carrying on. This campaign is for anyone suffering with depression, anxiety, addiction or any other issue associated with mental health.
The issue is real, and telling people to ‘perk up’ or ‘it’s just in your head’ isn’t a realistic suggestion. Depression is caused by the lack of serotonin in the brain, not something that you can just ‘snap out of’. Just because the illness is of the mind, doesn’t make it any less important as a physical ailment. Educate yourselves, and understand a big proportion of the world that is judged daily.
Millennials reportedly suffer more with mental health than any other generation. What with the financial crisis we’ve been bought up in, the pressures of social media its easy to see why. My mental health worsened after the birth of my daughter, I’ll speak about that in another blog. I was a Recovery Support Worker, supporting those with schizophrenia, personality disorder and bipolar etc. Mental health is something very close to my heart so will definitely re-visit this subject!
